Lymphedema

Lymphedema occurs when the ability of the lymphatic system to transport fluid has been compromised. The accumulation of lymph fluid in various tissues results in an increased risk of infection, decreased oxygenation of body tissues, swelling in the limbs, and pain or discomfort in the back, shoulders, or knees.  At this time, there is not a clear understanding of all the causes of lymphedema and there is no known cure for the condition. However, with early intervention and therapy, the condition can be effectively managed.

Lymphedema Therapy Services

Denton Regional provides a comprehensive program for the treatment of lymphedema, including a LANA and Vodder trained Occupational Therapist. Our specially trained staff provides patient education, as well as the evaluation and management of lymphedema with the most effective treatment options available, including the following:

  • Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD): Therapists use specific hand movements that follow lymph pathways to facilitate the movement of fluid in the lymph vessels
  • Bandaging and Compression: “Short” stretch bandages prevent the accumulation of lymph fluid in the tissues. Bandages are worn overnight between MLD sessions
  • Remedial Exercises: Exercises used to facilitate the movement of lymph fluid
  • Education: During the intensive phase of treatment you will be taught self massage, skin care, exercises, and self-bandaging
